Jillian Dawson+Deju Vu

June 15th, 2011

A few weeks back my friend and makeup artist Jillian Dawson got ahold of me asking if I would be willing to shoot some shots for her portfolio. I of course agreed right away after hearing that we’d be shooting in the martini lounge that she also works at called “Deja Vu.” Definitely check it out if you haven’t.

We’ve been trying to get a shoot together for so long but plans always ended up changing. So when given the chance again, I knew that we both had to follow through and make it work. Thank you’s go out to my fiance Annette for modeling, along with Sarah Beggs and Erica Krumbein, friend and fellow photographer Dave Jackson for helping me out with some lighting equipment, and Jillian Dawson for doing some awesome makeup!

Here’s a few shots from the day. All shot with an Alien Bee 1600 at about 1/4 power with a Wescott 50″ soft box directly overhead.

BEACH NERDS!

May 30th, 2011

Just got back from one hell of a vacation! I spent the last week on Emerald Isle in North Carolina with my fiance Annette, her old brothers Jay and girlfriend Hanh, Erich, her dad Volker, and stepmom Sue. The 21 hour drive was definitely worth it. We started off our time on Emerald Isle with a swim in the ocean. After that we ate some of the best pizza I’ve ever had followed by a much needed night of sleep. After settling in, we decided to go into town and check out what souvenirs we could pick up. I got some Carolina BBQ sauce and a new cookbook to add to the collection. As for Annette, anything that involved an octopus, we had to buy. She picked up an octopus puppet and an awesome octopus kite!

Most of the vacation was filled with hours of swimming, shell hunting, board games, and of course a good beer here and there. If anyone can find a beer called “The Reverend” you need to buy it!

So it was nearing the end of the trip and I hadn’t really shot a whole lot. Everyone was out on the beach so I decided to pack up my gear and see what kind of shots I could get. It was still pretty bright out and I only had 1 speed light with me. Since it was fairly windy, I didn’t even bother using a modifier. Just one bare bulb speed light paired up with a few beach props and here’s what happens:

In Appleton with Matthew Billingsley

April 28th, 2011

Yesterday I traveled to Appleton to hang out with my good friend and fellow photographer Matthew Billingsley. I had the pleasure of photographing him followed by me getting destroyed two times at Egytian Rat in about 5 minutes. It was not my day for cards.

Visiting Steve Birr and friends at Atomic Tattoo

March 27th, 2011

Just this past weekend I traveled down to Milwaukee to visit my good friend and amazing tattoo artist Steve Birr to get the infamous pudgy pie maker tattoo I’ve been wanting for so long. Steve has always been a really fun subject to photograph so I figured I’d pack up all my gear and hopefully be able to snap a few portraits of Steve and the other artists.

I got the pleasure of meeting and hanging out with John Bartels and Kyle Cook whose work is absolutely incredible. Definitely some awesome dudes to hang out with. Here’s a few portraits of Steve, John, and Kyle.

Very easy light setup. Just an 18″ DIY beauty dish off to camera right and for the portraits of John and Kyle, the beauty dish is directly in front of the subject and at eye level.

A visit to Steven Myron Birr

September 4th, 2010

A couple weeks ago I went down to visit my friend Steve in Milwaukee who I haven’t seen in quite some time. I also met his friend Mic whose a super awesome dude. We hung out at Steve’s house for a bit, grabbed a bite and a quick beer and did a shoot just like the good ol’ days. Really awesome time. Can’t wait to visit those guys again.

Aj is finally back in Appleton!

August 10th, 2010

Hey again. I’m still alive. I’ve been in a little funk lately which has caused me to not shoot nearly as much as I’d like. I learned a couple weeks ago that my friend AJ had moved back to Appleton from Madison. I’ve done shoots with AJ in the past and they were always a ton of fun so I decided to get another one together. The location was beyond awesome and AJ is always a good model so the shoot went very very well. Take a look, tell me what you think.

I’m still alive

March 29th, 2009

Hello everyone. Sorry for the lack of updates recently. Being busy with catching up on old work has really prohibited me from getting this blog updated. Below are some very recent photos I took when on a trip around Tennessee just this past week with my girlfriend Annette. Traveling to Chatanooga, Nashville, and Memphis gave me plenty of chances for some great places for photos. Unfortunately, I only did one shoot but it was definitely worth it.

Hope everyone enjoyed them. You can see the rest on my flickr if you like. Thanks everyone! I promise I’ll stay current with the updates.
